1996 FRANKLIN RESEARCH SCHEDULE

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 1 11 - 29 January
Fremantle - Fremantle

Dr Lindsay Collins
Curtin University of Technology
GPO Box U1987 Perth WA 6001

Holocene biogenetic sedimentation - Rottnest Shelf WA

   * To document the nature, distribution and density of the shelf and upper
slope sediments in relation to the modern oceanographic regime
   * To produce a facies map of Holocene sediments and determine the
relative diagenesis of sedimentary particles and to document by seismic
Holocene-Pleistocene stratigraphy and relate this record to sea level
     changes

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 2 21 February - 6 March
Fremantle - Dampier

Dr Patrick De Deckker
Department of Geology
ANU Canberra ACT 2600

Modern distributions and chemistries of Benthic and Planktic Biota from the
South Eastern Indian Ocean

   * To establish the relationship between distributions of benthic
     organisms and environmental parameters
   * To determine the ecology, palaeoecology and trace element chemistry of
benthic foraminifera and ostocoda species in the Southeastern Indian
     Ocean

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 3 7 - 21 March
Dampier - Dampier

Dr Brad Opdyke
Department of Geology
ANU Canberra ACT 2600

Glacial carbonates of the Northwest Australian margin: A search for
Palaeoclimate indicators

   * It is proposed to improve the Quaternary climate record off the coast
of Western Australia by coring sediments on the Sahul Shelf, within the
Bonapart Gulf and at depths of 80 to 150 m near present day coral reef
     buildups
   * This cruise will aid in the understanding of palaeoclimate/palaeocean
research in this region and further assist in our understanding of the
     global carbon cycle

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 4 22 - 30 March
Dampier - Fremantle

Dr Rick Fletcher
WA Fisheries Institue
PO Box 20 North Beach WA 6020

Distribution and abundance of Scaly Mackerel eggs and larvae off Western
Australia

   * To determine the distribution and abundance of scaly mackerel eggs and
larvae along the Geraldton region of Western Australia in relationn to
     the Leeuwin current
   * Determine the influence of the Leeuwin current on the depth
stratification of scaly mackerel eggs and larvae

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 5 7 - 31 May
Fremantle - Dampier

Dr Peter McIntosh
CSIRO - Oceanography
GPO Box 1538 Hobart Tas 7001

Mixing and circulation in the Perth Basin

   * The objectives are to conduct a closely spaced CTD survey around the
Perth Basin so that flows at all depths can be estimated by inverse
     methods
   * To deduce the importance of mixing processes by examining changes in
     the water mass properties

Ms Esmee Van Wijk
School of Earth Sciences
Flinders University
GPO Box 2100 ADELAIDE SA 5001

Horizontal and Spatial Dynamics of Surface Phytoplankton

   * To determine the Horizontal and spatialdynamics and controlling
mechanisms of surface phyto plankton communities in the open ocean.
This research will focus on species and biomass across both large and
     small scale hydrographic fronts

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 6 1 - 11 June
Dampier - Fremantle

Prof Matt Tomczak
Flinders University
GPO Box 2100 Adelaide SA 5001

Seasonality of ocean transport in the tropical Indian ocean

   * This cruise is to recovery current meter mooring deployed in the
tropical Leeuwin Current in August 1994. A CTD and ADCP survey will be
     carried out before the recovery

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 7 14 August - 11 September
Dampier - Dampier

Dr Stuart Godfrey
CSIRO - Oceanography
GPO Box 1538 Hobart Tas 7001

Freshwater and heat budgets in the tropical Indian Ocean

   * The main objectives are to undertake a budget closure designed
primarily to measure the spatially inhomogeneous freshwater input and
to obtain data from surface moorings for testing hypotheses regarding
the intraseasonal oscillations in Asian monsoon rainfall.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 8 12 - 28 September
Fremantle - Fremantle

Dr Trevor McDougall
CSIRO - Oceanography
GPO Box 1538 Hobart Tas 7001

Moored measurements and CTD sections of the flow of Deep and Bottom Water
into the west Australian Basin of the Indian Ocean

   * To recover current meters which measured the flow of Deep and Bottom
water into the West Australian Basin
   * To use these data together with CTD sections to deduce the flow of
waters, estimate the vertical diffusivity and, by obtaining more
reliable estimates of the equatorial flux, contribute to the estimate
of poleward heat flux borne by the Indian Ocean.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cruise 9 30 October - 22 November
Fremantle - Darwin

Dr Gregg Brunskill
Australian Institute of Marine Science
Townsville, Qld 4810

Exmouth hydrocarbon transect

   * To compare rates of production and decomposition of organic matter on
the NW Australian Shelf, slope and Exmouth Plateau
   * To determine the water column concentrations and fluxes of persistent
     hydrocarbons
   * To find locations of sediment accumulation
